Leadership Update for Mitsubishi Power in Asia Pacific

New Leadership Signals Company’s Enhanced Commitment to Decarbonizing Power Systems in the Region 

ASIA PACIFIC, SINGAPORE (1 September 2020) – Osamu Ono has been appointed as the Managing Director and CEO of the Asia Pacific region for Mitsubishi Power, Ltd., a major wholly owned subsidiary within the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group.

Ono assumed the position on April 1, 2020 at Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. (MHPS-AP), and he continues to helm the regional business after the company’s rebrand to Mitsubishi Power today (1 Sept).

Based at the regional headquarters in Singapore, Ono oversees planning and execution of the company’s business growth strategies across key markets such as Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Working closely with a team of 2,000, he is committed to delivering solutions, enabling energy security, and continued economic development for countries in the region as they transition to cleaner power systems.

Prior to assuming this role, Ono was Senior Executive Vice President and Head of the Philippines Branch of MHPS-AP. In that capacity, he strengthened collaboration among the three MHPS subsidiaries in the country, which include a boiler factory, a technical service provider and a plant service provider. He supervised the Global Service Center in Manila, which houses one of four MHPS Remote Monitoring Centers (RMC) around the world. The Manila RMC leverages big data to provide insights, solve complex problems and maximize overall power plant performance for customers in Asia Pacific using TOMONI™ digital solutions. 

Ken Kawai, President and Chief Executive Officer, Mitsubishi Power said, “Ono possesses almost 40 years of sales and management experience in the power sector in Asia Pacific. His wealth of knowledge will enable him to take Mitsubishi Power Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd., to new heights. His recent success in harmonizing our Philippines businesses is also critical as we endeavor to establish greater synergies among our organizations across the region.” 

Ono said, “While Asia Pacific has a diverse energy landscape, the need to maintain reliable and sustainable power remains the same across all markets. My goal is to bolster relationships and collaborations across the region to address each country’s unique needs and empower them in their respective journeys towards a clean energy future.”

Ono started his career at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) in 1983 at the department for Domestic Nuclear Power Plants servicing Japanese utilities. During his time at MHI, he spent almost six years in India as the commercial and administrative manager for MHI’s first export gas turbine combined-cycle project. He joined MHPS upon its establishment in 2014.

Ono graduated from Kyushu University with a degree in Economics.
