Duisburg/Kozienice, June 12th, 2014 – Construction of the new coal-fired power plant at Kozienice in Poland has reached an important milestone. The first of the four boiler columns was fixed on the project site today, on June 12th. This marks the start of work on the actual utility power generator – the heart, in fact, of the ultra-modern bituminous coal power plant.

The plant is being built by Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Europe (MHPSE) and consortium partner Polimex-Mostostal (PXM); the purchaser is Polish energy supplier ENEA Wytwarzanie. The foundation stone for the power plant was laid on November 21st 2012. The plant is designed for an installed capacity of 1,075 megawatts (MW) and a 45.59% net efficiency. On being placed into operation as planned in 2017, it will rank amongst the most efficient of its type in the world.

The four columns of the boiler supporting structure are fixed on the foundation. The total weight of the boiler steel structure amounts for 3.250 tonnes. It is supplied by Donges SteelTec, a MHPSE subsidiary, and delivered directly to the construction site by means of special road transportation. The heaviest components, weighing over 180t, will be lifted to the level of 100m by two crawler cranes manufactured by Sarens Polska. More than a hundred of highly qualified engineers will participate in the assembly process. The construction of the main supporting structure of the boiler will be finished by the end of August, 2014.

"Work on the Kozienice project is running according to plan" says Rainer Kiechl, CEO of the MHPSE Board of Directors. "The close interaction of design engineering and production ensures top quality and a high degree of reliability in delivery."

The most important components for the ultra-modern unit either come from companies within the corporate group or from parent company Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS). These include the utility steam generator including coal bunkers, coal mills, firing equipment, flue gas cleaning, and some balance-of-plant. MHPS supplies the steam turbine, generator and auxiliary equipment. Babcock-Hitachi K.K. (BHK) supplies the flue gas desulphurization plant. PXM is responsible for the construction, assembly and supply of the service equipment of the power plant.

"The construction of the new 1,075MW Power Unit is an extremely complex process, requiring perfect cooperation of all involved in the project parties, beginning with the project, through deliveries, adjusting of the contractors' and sub-contractors' schedules, ending with quality assurance and supervision. Important is the fact that all those actions are happening within the

existing infrastructure of the Kozienice Power Plant. ENEA Wytwarzanie provides a team of professionals to execute the project. On-time assembly of such an important component as the boiler supporting structure confirms very good cooperation between the Customer and the Contractor", says Krzysztof Sadowski, President of the ENEA Wytwarzanie Board of Directors.

The Kozienice 11 project, however, represents only an initial step for Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Europe. The energy plant constructor intends to play a significant role in the expansion of the power generation system in Poland. In so doing, MHPSE relies on its extensive references and a know-how going back over a century in planning, constructing and commissioning thermal power plants.
