Mitsubishi Power Europe has developed various technologies to convert surplus renewable electricity into valuable fuels or raw materials. One example is Methanol that can be produced from carbon dioxide emitted from a coal power plant and hydrogen. Apart from large-scale power stations, other industries with high CO2 emissions (steelworks, chemical plants, refineries, cement factories) are suitable for methanol synthesis. Such plants can absorb excess power from renewable resources, stabilize the grid and produce methanol that can be used in various industries or as fuel in power plants.

Power-to-Fuel (PtF)

From an unloved by-product of conventional electricity production valuable fuels or raw materials can be obtained: in the case of power-to-fuel technology methanol, for example can be produced from carbon dioxide – for instance from a thermal power plant – and hydrogen. A consortium with Mitsubishi Power Europe as the system integrator has constructed such a plant for methanol synthesis.
