Mitsubishi Power Chosen to Provide Advanced Gas Turbine to Atura Power’s Napanee Generating Station Expansion Project in Ontario

Atura Signing Ceremony 2024

LAKE MARY, Fla., (August 13, 2024) – Mitsubishi Power Americas was recently awarded a contract by Ontario’s Atura Power to supply an advanced gas turbine to the Napanee Generating Station Expansion project.

Atura Power, a subsidiary of Ontario Power Generation, is addressing Ontario’s growing demand for electricity by expanding the power generation capacity at its 900 MW Napanee Generating Station in the Town of Greater Napanee, Ontario. With a targeted completion by 2028, the planned expansion will greatly increase the station’s generation capacity and support grid reliability while the province moves towards a low-carbon energy future.

Atura Power will add an M501JAC hydrogen-ready combustion turbine from Mitsubishi Power Americas, that will operate in simple cycle and provide up to 430 MW of additional electricity to help meet Ontario’s growing demand. Known for its operational flexibility and fast start-up times, the M501JAC is adept at operating as a peaker and will join two M501GAC units already operating in combined cycle at the site. This will be the fifth Mitsubishi Power M501JAC turbine in Canada.

“As is the case in many regions in the Americas, Ontario is experiencing growing demand for reliable electricity that is both sustainable and affordable,” said Sheldon Myhre, President & CEO of Mitsubishi Power Canada, Ltd. “Atura Power is meeting that demand head-on with this expansion and we are pleased that, for the second time, they have chosen our advanced gas turbine technology for the Napanee Generating Station.”

“Increasing the Napanee Generating Station’s capacity by adding this advanced combustion turbine package from Mitsubishi Power will help Ontario’s electricity system stay reliable and affordable while the province brings more low-emitting technologies onto the grid,” said Shelley Babin, Atura Power President and CEO. “The Napanee Generating Station Expansion is an important part of the solution to meet the increased electricity demand needed for the broader decarbonization of our economy.”
