MHPS Delivers Lecture at the University of Indonesia on the Future Outlook for Environmentally Friendly Thermal Power Generation

YOKOHAMA, JAPAN (October 9, 2019) - Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Ltd. (MHPS), a group company of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), delivered a lecture on October 8 at the University of Indonesia in Depok, West Java, on the outlook for environmentally friendly thermal power generation technologies. MHPS Senior Vice President Junichiro Masada gave the lecture as part of MHPS' CSR program in Indonesia, explaining global trends in power generation technologies, and how these could benefit technological advancement in Indonesia.

Extension lectures such as this are held on a regular basis as part of the cultural exchange between Japan and Indonesia, sponsored by the University of Indonesia and the Center for Japanese Studies mainly for students of the university and other nearby academic institutions. In response to the recent rise in awareness of environmental issues around the world, the Japanese Embassy in Indonesia invited MHPS to deliver a lecture on the topic of “Future Outlook for Environmentally Friendly Power Generation - Solutions for a Low Carbon Society.” A large audience gathered in the hall to hear the talk by Senior Vice President Masada, who is Deputy Head of Turbomachinery Headquarters, and Senior General Manager of Gas Turbine Technology & Products Integration Division.

Masada opened the lecture by pointing out how air quality in Jakarta is the worst in the world. He offered as a potential solution the introduction of environmentally friendly power generation technologies, explaining in simple terms how a combination of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, and gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) or integrated coal gasification combined cycle (IGCC) facilities utilizing the country's abundant natural gas and other resources for power generation, would be a shortcut to achieving carbon reductions.

Masada gave an overview of MHPS' high-efficiency gas turbine technologies that give the company a technical advantage in global markets. He explained how the Takasago Works in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, has an integrated structure for research and development, design, manufacturing, and verification processes that allows it to quickly incorporate feedback among the different processes, and how this contributes to highly reliable gas turbines and a stable power supply. Masada also described MHPS' new power generation verification test facility to support development of next-generation gas turbines, currently being built on the grounds of the Takasago Works and scheduled to begin operations in 2020. He further talked about the core of innovation and the outlook for future technologies, such as the current state of development for hydrogen gas turbines that emit no CO2 and will support a zero-emission society.

MHPS has been active in the Indonesian market since 1971, when it delivered its first steam turbine to the country. In the near-half century since, MHPS has forged close ties in the country, with facilities delivered to date accounting for a total power output capacity of approximately 20 gigawatts (GW). Of these, MHPS' M701F gas turbines in Indonesia include two units delivered in 2006 for the Cilegon Power Plant, followed by installations at the Muara Karang Power Plant, the Tanjung Priok Power Plant, and most recently for the “Jawa-2 Project” in 2018. As a result, MHPS today holds the top share in Indonesia's market for large-scale gas turbines, including units for GTCC plants.

Going forward, MHPS will offer a range of environmentally friendly power generation technologies to support technological advancement in Indonesia, promote a low-carbon energy society, and contribute to the conservation of the global environment.
